eradicating AIDS (
Bono,
Oprah, and others;
Apple,
Motorola,
Gap, and others) to
adopting a poor African child (Brad and Angelina,
Madonna, among others), celebrities (and
companies) on the pursuit of humanitarianism. Is it for the limelight and bragging rights? Or is Hollywood finally growing some form of a conscience. Bono is not your typical rock star, and Oprah not the usual talk show (et al) goddess, but Madonna fits much of the Hollywood stereotype (as do Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt — to an extent).
Also, there are two new major celebrities on the world stage: the new
Nobel Peace Prize winner,
Muhammed Yunus and his bank (for issuing small loans in a not-for-profit business model of micro-loans/micro-credit
to the poor and seemingly helpless of Bangladesh)

, and the confirmed to-be
UN Secretary-General,
Ban Ki-moon (South Korean foreign minister voted in by both the Security Council and General Assembly).
What's hip, musical, and red all over? In technology news, you have the
red iPod
(which ties into the humanitarian news), the Nintendo
Wii game console news (let
PS3 v. Wii begin!), and a new, possibly groundbreaking,
Palm Trio. Microsoft has also announced that its next generation computer operating system,
Vista, is to roll out on schedule (that being the latest in a long line of release date changes). Another tech giant,
Google, seems to be buying/developing in every technology sector; e.g. video (
buying YouTube),
office (releasing
Docs and Spreadsheets online apps), etc.
