Senate outcome still unclear

The Democrats definitely control the House, but the Montana and Virginia (99 percent of precincts reporting; Allan (R) and Webb (D) are deadlocked with only 8,000 votes separating them) Senate races are both between 0 and 1 percent difference. The Dems and GOP are still — after a full night — tied 49-49 for control of the House of Representatives. The good news is McCaskill (D) ended up beating incumbent Talent (R) in the Missouri race. The Dems also won most other key races.

Going into tonight, Democrats had celebrated a grand total of three truly happy Election Nights—1986, 1992, 1996—in the past three decades and three truly miserable ones in this decade alone. So, for Democrats, an election in which we were destined to win back the House and a majority of governorships for the first time in 12 years is more than a good night. It's a new lease on life.
