Reports are coming out suggesting Israel's defense forces (IDF) and government might have an attack plan in case tensions with Syria elevate — not least they are preparing for a Syrian offensive. The attack may go ahead if another alleged attack plan by Syria (background) on its own Israeli-held Golan Heights is instigated from fear of Israeli attack. Israel has occupied the Golan Heights, which rightfully and legally belong to Syria, for decades. There have been rumors of a compromise, but the US would not support one between its ally, Israel, and apparent enemy Syria.
This all also ties into the fear of a US strike on Iran, which is a close Syrian ally as Israel is a close American ally. Israel’s prime minister, Ehud Olmert, said it would be a "miscalculation" by the Syrians if they see a need to attack the Golan Heights. And who says Middle East geopolitics is simple?
Also, the speaker of the American House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, visited Israel, Lebanon, and Syria. The White House condemned the latter-most visit to Syria. President Bush deemed it "counterproductive". This administration should know a thing or two about being counterproductive in foreign policy and diplomatic relations. Syria is an honorary member of the Bush's haphazard — in the sense it is very unhelpful with foreign relations — 'axis of evil'.
