Website of the Week: Digg

Digg is a great resource for news hounds, bloggers/writers/webmasters (for content, promotion), and just for average Web 2.0 Joe in general. As my third Website of the Week (WotW) (see first and second) for 9 October to 16 October 2006 (I know, I got a bet behind), Digg is definitely one of the symbols of the second generation of Internet services (there is a pun to that statement, i.e. it is literally and figuratively one of the symbols of Web 2.0...).

The way Digg works is users submit stories, and other users can either Digg (hence the website name) or bury the stories. Submitted links accrue points/votes (i.e. Diggs) and, depending on how fresh or popular they are, can be seen on the Upcoming of Popular pages. Thrown into the mix are different categories (e.g. Political Opinion, [Technology] Industry News, Educational Videos) and the ability of stories to, once they have enough Diggs, be promoted. I submit nearly all of this blog's posts onto Digg, and often get a high number of valuable visitors (often going to more than one page on the blog) from the Digg site. There is a lot more to Digg (comments, friends, etc.) that you will have to see for yourself.

Anyway, Digg is cool and I highly recommend checking it out. You can see me there too!

Note: even though Digg seems to always spell its site of the action of digging as "digg", I prefer, since it is a company name, registered, and is proper to capitalize the 'd'. This is coming from a person who notices whether and which writers/articles/publications use serial commas.
